Hi, I’m Laura Sandonato, a professional writer and editor who specializes in article and nonprofit writing. I live in Pittsburgh, but I work with clients all over the United States. My first article was published in 2008, and I have continued to pursue personal and professional writing projects ever since.
Shortly after graduating from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in hospitality and tourism management and a minor in professional writing, I became a cheesemonger. I enjoyed learning about cheese, and doubled my store’s cheese sales in less than two years. However, I quickly grew tired of smelling like eau de fromage.
Consequently, I used my experience as a cheese monger to contribute eight articles to Progressive Grocer’s “Walking an Aisle in Their Shoes” column. The column’s contributors’ were people like me who were working the front lines of the grocery industry. The column allowed Progressive Grocer’s target audience, the grocery industry’s key decision makers, to understand the perspectives of store-level employees.
While I was writing for Progressive Grocer, I started working with Loved Twice as a freelance grant writer. Loved Twice is a nonprofit in the San Francisco Bay Area that clothes newborns-in-need for their first year of life, and I've helped them raise $94,500 since 2012. Together, we continue to seek funding from grantmakers in the San Fransisco Bay Area.
I am always looking for opportunities to grow and develop both my website and my business. If you're interested in working with me either as a freelance writer or a blogger, view my portfolio and resume to learn more about me and my work.
Writing, Editing, and Advertising Services
Article Writing and Editing
I write ready-to-publish blog posts and articles for trade magazines and websites on a variety of topics including books, food, and business. I understand what it takes to write effectively for the 21st century while respecting traditional principles of writing and journalism. I'm familiar with AP style and Chicago style. I'm also happy to use your organization's style guide if you have one.
Of note, sometimes the best writer for your article or blog post is you, but even the best writers have editors. If you want to write or you have already written your own article or post, I can edit it for you. Whether you would like me to thoroughly edit your work or quickly proofread it, I'll make sure your article or post is polished and ready to go.
Nonprofit Grant Writing and Editing
You'll rarely find a grant maker that is completely compatible with your organization and its mission, which is what makes grant writing so tricky. I write grant proposals and letters of intent that communicate your organization's character while highlighting your fit.
Already have a proposal or letter of intent but need someone to tweak it? I'll tailor an existing proposal to meet specific grant makers' requirements.
Sponsored Posts, Giveaways, Interviews and Reviews
Although my blog is a history blog that focuses heavily on book reviews, I would also like to feature products and apps that help people read more efficiently and retain more of what they've read. Time management and organizational tools are also important to avid readers.
Additionally, I'm always looking for new books to review. I'm interested in any book or work of art based on a book that can teach us something about the past, present, or future (or all three). And, don't forget, popular culture is art too! If you're interested in featuring your product in a sponsored post, participating in an author interview, or having your work reviewed, contact me. I write pre-release and post-publication book reviews on both traditionally published and self-published books. I also post all my reviews on Goodreads and Amazon.
